Acer japonicum

Yama kage

( Mountain Shadow)

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

I'm always confusing this tree with Fern Leaf (A. japonicum 'Aconitifolium') when young. The main difference seems to be that the leaves on 'Mountain Shadow' are considerably larger, which makes them quite large indeed. The leaves are also a bit thinner, and held more stiffly away from the branches. They're less likely to burn or become leathery than other Japonicums. Will probably reach 15'; it's vigorous, with an upright habit. A Don Schmidt Nursery selection. The grafters, not usually impressed with the nuances of maple appreciation, had it marked "especial". And they didn't even see it in the fall, when it flares up in scarlet and burnt orange. A couple of name issues: the tree is usually seen labeled Yama kagi, but the correct Japanese is kage, not kagi. The 'e' is short, as in 'get'. We previously offered it as 'Mountain Shadow' before we realized the two names refer to the same cultivar. Now that we know it should be kage, the name makes sense, clearly translating as 'Mountain Shadow'.

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.
