Stress
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

A 15' upright whose name (so I read) refers to two separate characteristics. The first refers to the marbled nature of the leaves after the spring purple begins to fade. The leaves take on green, then brown markings. This color change is something most American writers don't like; they speak of its not holding its color well. Japanese writers, however, admire its changing nature. Plato meets Gautama in the clash of the titans. The second part of the name allegedly means "butterflies", referring to the bright, beautiful seeds that this cultivar is known for. Though I am the furthest thing from a Japanese scholar, I do own a Japanese dictionary, and while I can find many meanings for 'nagashi', literally including the kitchen sink, it doesn't, as far as I can tell, mean "butterfly" (usually cocho). Another culture clash, maybe. Or bad spelling. Now, all this is according to one source. Another source says the name means "village on the riverbank". This source also says it will grow to 30+', not 15', and that it is one of the best dark purple cultivars for maritime climates. Size
#1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April. |

|
Size
#3 trees are available
beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root
to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars
are not available in this size. |
Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
but read this to see if
it's a good idea for you. |
