Viola hederacea --Tasmanian Violet is a beautiful moisture-loving creeper with lavender and white flowrs on long stems above glossy round leaves. A much more free-blooming violet than usual natives; it may bloom right through summer. A fine specimen for hanging baskets, blooming on tendrils as it trails over the sides of the pot. Hardy only to Zone 9, but can be easily kept indoors over winter. In fact, it's a fine houseplant, easily adapting to low light as long as it is kept moist. Dappled shade is ideal outside.

Viola labradorica
has purplish leaves and purple flowers. Its range includes Alaska, as
well as Labrador, and although it is invasive, it is useful on shaded
banks, woodlands, and wild gardens.

Vigna caracalla -- Snail
Vine, Corkscrew Vine -- A vigorous subtropical vine with
very distinctive snail shell flowers in tight, foot-long clusters from
midsummer through fall. Flowers are light purple, and may be marked
with white and yellow. Does nicely in a sunroom container, where it
will stay relatively small, or outdoors in the warmest zones, where it
may twine to 20 feet or more, depending on the length and warmth of the
season. Or, it can be grown outside during the warm months, then cut
back, brought indoors, and treated as a houseplant. Bloom is quite
fragrant as well as attractive, interesting, and long-lasting.
Nurseries have been known to tout this as the latest, greatest thing,
but it was admired by Thomas Jefferson and grown in his Monticello
vegetable gardens, because it produces an edible bean. South America. |

Vitex agnus-castus -- Chaste
Tree, Monks' Pepper -- A large, spreading, deciduous shrub,
6-10', with long, showy spikes of purple flowers (just getting started
in the photo) that come on late in the season. The flowers are followed
by dark berries that have had many medicinal uses, including their use
in 6th century monasteries to help monks keep their vows of chastity,
hence the common names. Drought resistant, but grows faster and larger
with ample water. Survives in zones 6-9, but may suffer considerable
dieback in severe zone 6 winters, keeping it to a smaller size. |
