Tree sizes and prices

(Revised 2/2010)

Size #1 trees, also called new grafts, are grafted in July-September, and offered for sale 6-9 months later. They may be anywhere from 5" to 15" tall, depending on variety. They are usually unbranched, and are shipped in pots that are 3 1/2" in all dimensions. The largest variety of cultivars is available in this size.

Size #2 trees are a year or more older than new grafts, typically branched to some extent, and shipped in pots that are 3 1/2" square, but 5+" deep. They are often large enough to be grown in gallons, typically 15-24", but keeping them in smaller deep pots allows us to ship them much more economically while still allowing room for the roots to grow. Only the cultivars that don't sell out as new grafts can be offered in this size, so variety is more limited.

Size #3 trees are shipped bare-root September-February, again allowing for much more economical (and easier for us) shipping. These are typically 16-36" tall and two years older than new grafts. We grow them in 1/2 gallon and gallon pots, but don't ship them in their pots unless you're willing to pay significantly higher shipping costs. We don't ship them at all during the spring rush, March 1-June 1. Keep in mind that, if you order these during the winter, that's when we'll ship them, not during the spring rush. If you live in a cold climate, please read the Winter Shipping page to make sure this is a good idea for you. Fall- and winter-shipped trees will miss our dormant spraying, so you should do that to prevent disease.

Again only trees that don't sell out as #1 or #2 are available as #3s, so not nearly all cultivars will be available in this size.

In September, we may sometimes introduce new, rare, and more difficult-to-propagate cultivars. Although these are grafted at the same time as new grafts, they have had more time to establish themselves and grow to a reasonable size before being offered.
